Bedford is an attractive market town and regional centre for shopping, leisure and tourism. It has a population of just under 100,000. The heart of the town is the Embankment along the River Ouse with formal gardens laid out along the banks. There are excellent sports facilities with the recent addition of a new athletics stadium and a new hockey club which attract national and international athletics as well as the long-standing facilities such as Bedford rugby Club and of course rowing on the river. Sailing and other water facilities are available at Priory Marina on the edge of town.
A large leisure complex with multiscreen cinema, restaurants, bowling alleys and other facilities was opened in 1990.
On the cultural side, Bedford is the home of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Museum as well as the Philharmonic Orchestra which now perform at the Corn Exchange.
