A city well known for its excellent university, the beauty of its colleges and the willow-lined Cam which meanders through it.
Cambridge flourished as a town long before the first students and teachers arrived 800 years ago. It grew up when the Romans built a fort at Castle Hill, to the north of the river, which developed into a small town.
In 1951 Cambridge was given the status of a city, it now has a population of over 100,000. Hundreds of small high-tech firms have been attracted to and developed in the area, this concentration of high-tech industry has become known as 'the Cambridge Phenomenon'.
